Great Britain. Copper Penny, 1860 over 1859. S.3948; KM-739, Victoria. Obverse; Portrait of queen by William Wyon. VICTORIA DEI GRATIA. Reverse; Britannia holding ornamental trident. Mint state with much original mint red, especially on the reverse. An unusually superb example of this exceptionally rare date from the popular Victorian copper Penny series. *Peck pointed out that the copper Victoria young head issue is notable for the number of coins bearing altered dates struck from overcut dies of a previous year. This expedient, he says, was simply a matter of economy, as it enabled the full life of a lightly worn die to be utilized instead of scrapping it at the end of the year for which it was dated. The alteration on 1860, the die of which was made by overcutting one of 1859.
Very few copper pennies dated 1860 were made, and few have survived in mint state. In late 1860 the whole copper coinage was replaced by smaller bronze coins, and the 1860 bronze penny is relatively common.
