* 'The Gothic' Crown of 1847 (a similar version appeared in 1853) is considered to be one of the most attractive silver coins in the British numismatic series, and high grade specimens have always been in great demand. The design was never intended for circulation but was produced to show the best of the engraver's art. The obverse was designed by the celebrated coinage artist William Wyon, and the reverse was by Mr William Dyce RA.
It is believed that a relatively small number of these beautiful silver Crown pieces were produced in 1847 to gauge public acceptance of a design which would feature on the new denomination florin (or two-shilling coin) intended for circulation in the following year.

Realized $10,500
