Lot 17

1794 S-31 R1 PCGS graded AU53. Very attractive glossy medium chocolate brown blending to darker olive brown and steel in protected areas. The surfaces are smooth and nearly void of marks. A tiny tick at the corner of the eye and a small flake or struck-through line in the center of the nose can help identify this cent. E-MDS, Breen state I, with faint die clashmarks on the reverse. Graded EF40 Choice and tied for CC#16 in the Noyes census, his photo ANS #285. Our grade is EF40+ Choice. Both sides of this cent are plated in the 1910 Elder-Gilbert reference on the cents of 1794 (which was an update to the 1893 Frossard-Hays reference). A very nice 1794 cent, and it comes with a notable provenance. The attribution and Sheldon-ANS provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 8 finer: 1 in 55+, 2 in 62, 1 in 63, 1 in 63+, 2 in 64, 1 in 66. PCGS #35558. Estimated Value $7,500 - UP
