Augustus, 27 BC-14 AD. Gold Aureus (7.99g). Struck at Lugdunum, 2 BC-AD 4. CAESAR AVGVSTVS DIVI F PATER PATRIAE. Laureate head of Augustus right. Reverse: AVGVSTIF COS DESIG PRINC IVVENT, C L CAESARES, in exergue. Caius and Lucius Caesars standing facing, supporting between them two shields and two spears; above, simpulum and lituus. RIC 206; Lyon 81; BMC 513-8; Calicó 176a. Rare. A bold strike on a full flan with somewhat rough surfaces. NGC grade XF; Strike: 5/5, Surface: 3/5. Estimated Value $7,500 - UP
Augustus formally adopted his two grandsones, Gaius and Lucius, the children of his friend and general M. Agrippa and his only child, his daughter Julia. Both were groomed as heirs, but neither survived him, Lucius dying in Gaul in AD 2 and Gaius in Lycia in AD 4. With their deaths Augustus was forced to look for another suitable candidate to succeed him, and selected his stepson Tiberius.
