Lot 702

1859-C. PCGS graded MS-61. Lovely gold toning and a true condition rarity in any Mint State grade, with no more than 10 that likely can claim this grade. The obverse is rather sharply struck for this particular date and mint, but the reverse is always fuzzy in detail. Experts believe that something went wrong with the reverse die (shipped in late 1858 to the Charlotte Mint). The reverse die may have been improperly annealed or something similar which made the entire die poorly defined and definition is just mushy. This is how this date and mint is always found. Clean surfaces and one of the nicest examples of this date known. Softly struck in the center of reverse, always seen. Only 31,847 struck. Pop 4; 4 finer, 1 in 62+, 2 in 63, 1 in 66. (PCGS # 8281) Estimated Value $8,000 - UP
