Lot 505

1893 Set of Four Pressed Wood Exposition Building Medals. There are eight varieties listed in the Eglit (varieties 146 through 152A). This lot has four of the Eglit varieties. They are all very large high relief medals made of pressed black walnut. They were made out of compressed walnut wood blanks to demonstrate the high pressure press capabilities of the T. W. & C. B. SHERIDAN bookbinding who was an exhibitor in the Manufacturers and Liberal Arts building at the Exposition. Given that they are made of wood, these medals are easily damaged.  The four medal in this lot are as follows. Eglit-147, the Administration Building, 89mm is in great condition with good color and no staining but with a few minor cracks on reverse. Eglit-149, the Machinery Hall, 88mm, excellent condition with only one blemish on the obverse, possibly the result of a sticker. Eglit-151, the Hall of Mines and Mining, 89mm is also a nice example but has numerous cracks on the reverse, on crack from the edge on the obverse. There is a small hole going through the medal in the field below 12 o'clock surrounded by a darker, discolored retangular area. Still a desireable piece. And Eglit-152, The Government Building, 88mm. This medal has numerous cracks on the reverse and from the rim on the obverse as well as several areas of darker discoloration and several pin holes. These are all very desireable medals and reasonably well preserved. Estimated Value $200 - UP
