Lot 971

1856 N-16 R2+ PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown. Lustrous mint red fading to light steel brown on the highpoints with about two-thirds of the mint color remaining visible. There are some tiny specks of darker toning (not carbon) scattered over both sides. A spot under the E in ONE can help identify this cent. The only other notable mark is a nick-like planchet chip in the dentils over the right side of star 8 (as struck). MDS, die state b. The earlier die lines under the 18 are gone (Newcomb's old #15). A very nice cent. Our grade is MS63+, tied for CC#1 honors in the Grellman census. And this example has more mint color than any other example in his census. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Pop 1; 1 finer in 65 for MSRB. Value $650 - UP
