Lot 970

1856 N-13 R2 Italic 5 PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Frosty light olive brown and bluish steel with mellowed mint red in some of the protected areas on both sides. No spots or stains, but there are small lint marks in the field before the neck and mouth (created by lint or other fine debris on the die). In addition there is a shallow low spot covering the field from star 9 down to below star 11 (as struck). The reverse is essentially flawless except for minor strike weakness on the leaves under STATES. E-MDS, die state b. The strong die line down from the O in ONE is dull but clearly visible. Our grade is MS60, tied for CC#8 in the Grellman census. Previously housed in a PCGS holder graded MS62RB (PCGS label #1920.62/9219745). The attribution and Matthews Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; 1 finer in 65. Value $250 - UP
