Lot 964

1856 N-9 R3 Upright 5 PCGS graded MS65 Brown, CAC Approved. Lustrous steel brown and light olive with at least 10% of the planchet showing mint red. No spots, stains, or notable contact marks. A tiny diagonal struck-through line right of the upper point of star 13 is the best identifying mark, and you need a strong glass to see it. M-LDS, die state d, with numerous die cracks on the reverse. There are a few very tiny low spots on the neck, as struck. The doubled die feature on the obverse is obvious, especially on the eyelid and the lowest curl on the neck (a real doubled die, not machine doubling). A very nice example of this variety. Our grade is MS63, tied for CC#2 in the Grellman census. The attribution and Matthews Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; none finer. Value $650 - UP
From the Robert E. Matthews Collection-Matthews Estate.
