Lot 954

1856 N-2 R1 Italic 5 PCGS graded MS65+ Red & Brown. Choice lustrous light steel brown with a third of the planchet showing slightly faded mint red, mostly on the reverse. Satiny mint frost covers this cent and the eye appeal is outstanding. No spots or stains, and the only mark is a small nick off the end of the wreath stem. Would rate a higher grade if the tip of the coronet was fully struck. MDS, die state d, with very fine die cracks through several of the stars. Our grade is MS63+, tied for CC#7 in the Grellman census. The attribution and Matthews Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer. Value $600 - UP
