Lot 9

1794 S-20b R5 Head of 1793, Edge of 1794. PCGS graded VF-35. CAC. Choice glossy light to medium brown with some darker steel brown toning on the highpoints of the portrait. Hints of underlying mint frost show in protected areas on the reverse and this cent has wonderful eye appeal, especially for this variety. The surfaces are perfectly smooth and the only notable mark is a very light rim bruise under the tip of the bust. Graded VF25 and tied for CC#4 honors in the Noyes and Bland census lists, Noyes photo #20292. Our grade is VF25+. The finest known example of the variety resides in the ANS Collection and the next two pieces are marginally finer with some problems that degrade their eye appeal. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 1 finer in 50. (PCGS # 35522) Estimated Value $35,000 - UP
Discovered in England by Stephen C. Fenton (Knightsbridge Coins, London) 8/7/1986-Douglas F. Bird Collection.

Realized $33,600
