Lot 835

1849 N-16 R5 PCGS graded AU58, CAC Approved. Frosty medium brown and light olive with traces of very faded mint color showing in protected areas on the reverse. Sharply struck with just a hint of friction on the highpoints, but there are a few contact marks on the obverse. The notable ones are a few very light diagonal scratches or long nicks on the cheek, a diagonal nick on the rim under the 4, and a nick in the dentils above star 10. The reverse is free of marks and it looks mint state. EDS, die state a, with swelling inside the bottom of the 9 but no crumbling. A decent example of this tough die variety. Our grade is net AU50, tied for CC#6 in the Grellman census. The attribution and Matthews Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; 3 finer: 1 in 62, 1 in 63, 1 in 65+. Value $650 - UP
