1794 S-19b R4 Head of 1793, Edge of 1794. PCGS graded EF-40. CAC. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints of the portrait. The surfaces are smooth and hints of mint frost show in the protected areas on both sides, especially on the reverse. Just a few minor contact marks including a tiny rim bruise under the 94 and another over the second A in AMERICA. There are some tiny planchet chips that didn't strike out of the planchet along the dentil tips at ERTY to before the face with similar chips at the opposing dentils over ERICA and below the fraction. Nearly all the higher grade example of this variety show similar strike weakness in these areas. MDS, Breen state II, with obvious swelling in the field under the cap. Graded VF30 net VF25 and tied for CC#6 in the Noyes census, his photo #20861. Del Bland says VF30 and tied for CC#6 in his census. Our grade is VF30. A wonderful example of this 1794 Head of 1793 variety. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 2 finer: 1 in 50, 1 in 53.
