Lot 797

1847 N-42 R6+ PCGS graded Proof-63 Brown, CAC Approved. Attractive light olive with overtones of light bluish steel. Mint red covers about 20% of both sides. No carbon spots, but there are some microscopic specks of slightly darker steel brown toning visible under magnification, mostly on the cheek and neck. This cent has the eye appeal of a choice Red & Brown Proof, but there are some contact marks on the obverse (the reverse is choice). The notable marks are a thin horizontal scratch on the rim at star 12, a light vertical scratch on the rim over star 6, a horizontal scratch over star 8, and a diagonal nick in the hair right of the ear lobe. Sharply struck and attractive in spite of the marks. Comes with a custom display holder inscribed "John Jay Pittman Collection." Our grade is Proof-60. The attribution and Matthews Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 2 finer: 1 in 64, 1 in 66. Value $7,000 - UP
