Lot 79

1800 S-209 R3. PCGS graded MS-62 Brown. CAC. Frosty tan and light steel brown with tiny puffs of darker steel brown and olive toning on the obverse. Looks mint state but there is a hint of rub on the very highest points of the devices. No roughness, only a few small contact marks. The notable ones are a diagonal nick on the right top of the 1 in the date, a tiny scratch arcing through the bust tip, and a microscopic planchet chip on the bust (as struck). LDS, Breen state VII, with very fine die rust in the fields on the reverse and two narrow but clearly defined rim cud breaks under the denominator and ribbon end to the right. Graded AU55 and CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #25049. Bland says AU55 and CC#2 as well. Our grade is AU58. The finest known example of this variety brought $126,500 in our sale of the Daniel Holmes collection (9/6/2009:396). This one is beautiful but it should be considerably less expensive. Comes with a nice provenance. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer and the only MS graded at PCGS. (PCGS # 36215) Value $17,500 - UP
