Lot 772

1847 N-3 R3 EF40. Slightly sharper but there is a faint stain from star 12 to star 13 and another smaller one on the rim over star 5. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and quite nice for the grade. M-LDS, a previously unknown intermediate die state for this variety. There is a rim cud break at S-O and a small rim cud break over the right side of the R in AMERICA (about half the size of the normal rim cud in that area that extends to over the right edge of the adjacent E). These cuds are not bold but the margins of both cuds are clearly defined, and there is no trace of a rim cud at the first S in STATES. When Newcomb, Reiver, and Grellman wrote attribution guides for this variety they were aware of examples with no rim cuds, three rim cuds, and four rim cuds, but none with one or two rim cuds (or 1.5 rim cuds like this piece). This cent helps fill in that gap in the die state sequence. An important cent for the serious die state specialist. Value $300 - UP
