1800 S-204 R4. PCGS graded MS-62 Brown. CAC. Lustrous tan and light steel brown with puffs of light olive and darker steel brown toning on both sides. Mint frost covers this cent and the eye appeal is excellent. The only marks are a small planchet flake near the dentils off the lower end of the hair ribbon (as struck) and a line of microscopic ticks near the dentils before the nose. Rare LDS, Breen state VIII, with a wedge-shaped rim cud break opposite the mouth plus additional die failures and die cracks in the field near the cud. A beautiful cent in a very rare die state. Graded AU55 net AU50 and tied for CC#2 in the Noyes census (but clearly the finest of the late die state), his photo #28786. Bland says AU55 and finest known in his census. Both graders evaluated this cent when it was covered with a layer of wax or oil that has since been removed to expose the natural luster. Our grade is MS60. The obverse of this cent is plated in the 1991 Noyes reference to illustrate the late die state. Comes with a nice provenance.
