Lot 730

1843 N-14 R6+ Type of 1842 PCGS Proof, Unc Detail Graffiti. Medium brown and light chocolate. No spots, stains, or carbon spots, but this cent was intentionally mutilated. It appears someone used a compass to add circles and other lines around both sides. Otherwise the surfaces are quite nice and the toning is original. Sharply struck which you would expect for a proof strike, but a few of this variety are known with soft impressions (a fact noted in the 2001 Grellman reference on the cents of 1840-57). This piece has stars 9-11 boldly double and triple struck, and this does not look like the usual "machine doubling" that we often see on circulation strikes. An odd piece worth a close look. Our grade is net Proof-20. The attribution and Matthews Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Value $1,500 - UP
Ex J. R. Frankenfield 1/7/1990-Robert E. Matthews Collection-Matthews Estate.
