Lot 71

1800/79 S-195 R5 Overdate 80 over 79, Style II Hair. PCGS graded EF-45. Glossy olive and medium chocolate brown. The surfaces are perfectly smooth and this cent has great eye appeal. The only notable marks are a few small puffs of slightly darker toning at the top of the obverse, a pair of faint vertical hairlines on the cheek, and a thin diagonal nick in the field left of the lower curls. MDS, Breen state III, with die cracks on both sides but no cud break on the obverse. The 80 over 79 overdate feature is obvious. Graded EF40 net VF35 and CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #28692. Bland says VF35 and CC#2 in his census. The #1 coin in both census lists is impounded in the ANS collection so this is the finest example available to collectors. A wonderful example of this tough die variety. Our grade is VF35+. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer. (PCGS # 36164) Value $7,500 - UP
Discovered in Europe-William P. (Billy) Paul (American Heritage Minting) 11/8/1990-Douglas F. Bird Collection.
