Lot 7

1794 S-19a R5+ Head and Edge of 1793. PCGS graded VF-30. Frosty medium chocolate brown and steel. The surfaces are smooth and the eye appeal of this cent is outstanding. The only notable defects are three thin nicks: on the I in LIBERTY, another on that Y, and a final one on the left side of the numerator in the fraction. The reverse is sharper than the obverse (as always on this variety thanks to the high rim on that side), and it would grade at least 5 points higher than the obverse. The date and legends are strong and the edge lettering, including the downturned leaf following DOLLAR, is bold. MDS, Breen state I, with a single bulge in the field below the cap. Graded VF25 and CC#2 in the Bland census. Noyes says VF25 net VF20 and tied for CC#2, his photo #20465. Our grade is VF25. This is the plate coin for the variety in the Breen encyclopedia. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 1 finer in 40. (PCGS # 35516) Estimated Value $27,500 - UP
