Lot 689

1830 N-6 R4 Medium Letters NGC AU Details Burnished. Dark olive brown and steel. The obverse is dull while the reverse displays some frost, but both sides are covered with uniform extremely fine granularity. There are no marks at all and this cent was never "Burnished" as claimed by NGC. Perhaps they intended to say "Environmental Damage," which would be correct. MDS. The strike is soft, as usual for this variety, and there is very little actual wear on the highpoints. Other experienced graders have netted this piece at VF35; we feel more comfortable with VF25. Either way this is one of the sharpest examples known of the very popular Medium Letters (sometimes called "Small Letters") variety of 1830. The attribution and Mervis provenance are noted on the NGC label. Value $1,000 - UP
Ex 2008 ANA Convention bourse (via Greg Hannigan)-Adam Mervis, Heritage Auctions 1/10/2014:2145-The Westwood Collection (includes the Mervis collection envelope and lot ticket).
