Lot 68

1800/798 S-191 R3 Overdate 800 over 798, Style I Hair. PCGS graded Uncirculated Details Rim Damage. A sharp, attractive cent with mint state details, but both sides are covered with microscopic hairlines. In addition it appears this cent was tacked to a display board at one time, and if you look closely you can see several very tiny indentations around the obverse rim where the tiny tacks or other fasteners contacted the coin. Otherwise the only notable marks are a shallow planchet void (as struck) above the B in LIBERTY, a nearly horizontal nick high on the neck, and a spot of darker reddish brown toning at the left foot of the R in LIBERTY. Glossy reddish chocolate brown and steel. MDS, Breen state IV, with die cracks, bulges, and clashmarks on the reverse, but the loops in the wreath ribbon are still complete. The 800 over 798 overdate feature is clearly visible on all 3 digits. This is the Breen plate coin for the variety. Graded MS60 net EF45 and CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #21340. Bland says AU50 and tied for CC#1. Our grade is AU55 sharpness net EF45. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label (PCGS # 146099) Value $5,000 - UP
