Lot 67

1800/798 S-190 R3 Overdate 800 over 798, Style I Hair. PCGS graded MS-65 Brown. CAC. Choice lustrous bluish steel brown with underlying very faded mint color peeking through in the fields and protected areas, particularly on the obverse. Satiny mint frost covers this cent, even the highest points of the devices, and the eye appeal is outstanding. No spots or stains, and you need a strong glass to find any contact marks. A pair of tiny ticks on the truncation over the 00 in the date and some lighter tan toning around ICA and the fraction can help you identify this cent. Nicely struck E-MDS, Breen state II, with die clashmarks under the fraction but before any noticeable die rust or chipping. Graded MS63 Choice and CC#1 in the Noyes and Bland census lists, Noyes photo #20242. Our grade is MS63+. This is the undisputed finest known example of the variety, and it has the distinction of being the finest 1800/798 overdate with Style I Hair of any die variety. According to the Noyes condition census this is the only mint state example of the type, and it is truly beautiful. This is the plate coin for the die variety in the 1991 Noyes reference on early large cents. A highlight of this fabulous collection and a must-have for the collector who demands the very finest. This cent was housed in an NGC holder graded MS65RB when it was sold in the 2005 Rasmussen sale, but PCGS decided to cross it with a BN designation. Comes with a great provenance. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer. Only 2 graded MS at PCGS (the other is MS62BN). (PCGS # 36143) Value $100,000 - UP
