Lot 6

1793 S-14 R5- Liberty Cap. PCGS graded AU-50. Choice glossy light to medium chocolate brown and steel. Smooth and nearly flawless with only light wear on the highpoints of the devices. The only notable marks, and they are trivial, are a microscopic scrape on the rim over RT in LIBERTY, a broken line of microscopic planchet voids down the cheek, and a tiny rim nick between the I & T in UNITED. LDS, Breen state III. The bisecting die crack on the obverse is strong; the fields and devices on the left side of the crack are clearly on a higher plain than the ones on the right side. In addition there is a subtle bulge in the field at NT in CENT. A marvelous Liberty Cap Cent with great eye appeal. Graded EF40 by Del Bland and tied for CC#2 honors in his census. Noyes says EF40 and tied for CC#2 as well, his photo #20004. Our grade is EF40. (The finest example of this variety, the EF45 we sold in our Daniel Holmes sale, 9/6/2009:24, brought a hefty $506,000.) Comes with a nice provenance. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 2 finer: 1 in 50+, 1 in 53+. (PCGS # 35492) Estimated Value $225,000 - UP
