Lot 59

1798 S-155 R3 Style I Hair, Reverse of 1796. PCGS graded MS-61 Brown. Lustrous chocolate brown and steel with traces of lighter steel brown and tan toning in protected areas. Peeps of golden tan faded down from mint color are visible on the reverse and this cent has great eye appeal. Nearly void of marks or other distractions. A thin diagonal planchet void along a die crack just right of the date and a microscopic planchet flake over the bust tip (both as struck) can help identify this cent, but you need a good glass to see them. LDS, Breen state VI, with all the fine die cracks described by Breen, a small lump in the drapery on the bust, and fine die rust scattered over the reverse. A great example of the 1798 Reverse of 1796 type. Called AU55 and tied for finest known in the Noyes census, his photo #25295. Not seen by Bland. Our grade is MS60 (the PCGS assessment appears to be a bit harsh by their usual standards). The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 2 finer: 1 in 62, 1 in 65. (PCGS # 36002) Value $20,000 - UP
Ex a private collection in England-Christie's Auction 10/10/1989:400-Douglas F. Bird Collection.
