Lot 588
1843 N-6 R1 Mature Head, Repunched 18. NGC graded MS-64 Brown. Lustrous bluish steel brown and light chocolate with underlying faded mint red showing through on both sides. The only defect is a spot of shallow carbon on the face just above the nostril. Otherwise this cent is choice in every respect and the eye appeal is excellent. MDS, die state b, with a thin but clear rim cud break at star 13. The repunching at the bottom of the 18 is weak but still visible. Our grade is MS63. Tied for CC#5 in the Grellman census. The NGC label shows the attribution. This is the coin used by Howard Newcomb to illustrate the N-6 obverse in his book on the cents of 1816-57 (see plate XI). Comes with a very nice provenance. NGC population 1; 1 finer in 65BN. Value $1,200 - UP Ex Howard R. Newcomb, J. C. Morgenthau 5/16/1945:732-Floyd T. Starr, Stack’s 6/13/1984:430-R. E.
