Lot 576

1835 N-9 R4 Large 8 & Stars VG7. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate. The surfaces are smooth and there are no significant contact marks. Extremely rare terminal die state (TDS) with a strong cud break connecting stars 10 & 11 and extending down halfway to star 12. In addition there is a cud break at MERIC, but that cud is weak due to the uneven strike that is seen on all 7 of the TDS examples known today. The reverse is rotated 155 degrees CCW from the normal head-to-foot die orientation (which is similar to the rotation present all the TDS examples we have seen). The weakly struck areas are opposite each other and affect the bottom of the obverse (including the date) and all of AMERICA. The dramatically uneven strike makes grading difficult; the assigned grade reflects the properly struck areas. Not seen by Bland or Noyes. Value $500 - UP
Source unrecorded-The Widok Collection.
