Lot 57

1798/7 S-152 R2 Overdate Large 8 over 7. PCGS graded AU-58. Glossy tan and steel brown with a few puffs of darker olive brown toning in the field behind the portrait. Mint frost covers the protected areas and this cent looks much better in hand that it does in the Noyes photo. From the standpoint of wear this cent deserves an AU grade, but there are a few too many tiny contact marks on the obverse for a grade that high. A pair of dull, nearly parallel diagonal scratches in the field off the chin are the only notable contact marks, and they are barely visible to the unaided eye. The reverse is choice. EDS, Breen state I late. The wave from the rim to the hair under the ribbon is weak and there are traces of a micro-fine hairline crack along the wave, but there is no trace of die rust at RICA. The overdate feature is bold. Graded EF45 net EF40 and tied for CC#3 in the Noyes census his photo #34494. Not seen by Bland. Our grade is EF45. One of the very finest examples of this popular "Redbook" overdate variety. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 1 finer in 61. (PCGS # 35999) Value $12,000 - UP
Ex William P. (Billy) Paul (American Heritage Minting) 10/1995-Douglas F. Bird Collection.
