Lot 52

1797 S-136 R3. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. Choice glossy medium brown with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. Frosty lighter brown and tan toning covers the protected areas on both sides and the eye appeal of this cent is outstanding. The only marks are a tiny pinprick in the field before the middle of the neck and a short pin scratch over the bust tip. LDS, Breen state V, with a heavily blunted reverse die and fine die cracks at the U in UNITED and E in AMERICA. Die clashmarks are visible on both sides. Called AU55 Choice and tied for CC#1 honors in the Bland and Noyes census lists, Noyes photo #24192. In a side-by-side comparison with the equally graded Proskey-Hines-Sheldon-Naftzger coin conducted by Del Bland and others in June 1981, this piece was judged to be the finest by a very small margin. Our grade is AU58. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer. Only 3 graded MS at PCGS. (PCGS # 35939) Value $25,000 - UP
