Lot 517

1849 Small Date First Restrike Breen 1-B R6. NGC graded Proof 66 Brown. Incredibly beautiful light bluish steel and rose with faded mint red in some of the protected areas on the reverse. The only marks, and they are microscopic, are a tiny curved struck-through line in the field before the end of the nose, a speck of toning on the rim below the 9, and another speck at the right top of the second A in AMERICA. These marks can help identify this piece but they in no way detract from the outstanding eye appeal of this half cent. The fields are reflective and essentially void of hairlines. A premium example in every respect. In our opinion this example is superior to either of the two examples in the famous Missouri Cabinet collection, which is considered the finest collection of half cents ever formed (our sale 1/26/2014, lots 193 and 194 that brought $17,825 and $66,125 respectively). Our grade is Proof-66, same as the NGC assessment. A superb proof half cent and it comes with a great provenance. Worth a look even if you don't collect proof half cents. The Eliasberg provenance is noted on the NGC label. NGC population 1; none finer in BN at NGC. Value $25,000 - UP
Ex Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., Bowers & Merena 5/20/1996:471-Bowers & Merena 1/10/2000:7-The Widok Collection.
