Lot 47

1797 S-128 R3 M over E in AMERICA. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. CAC. Lustrous light olive and steel brown with mellowing mint red covering 10-15% of both sides. No spots or stains, but there are some small puffs of lighter golden tan on the lower part of the reverse. Just a few microscopic contact marks including a very light rim bruise over the right side of the E in UNITED. A pair of short, thin struck-through lines (caused by debris on the die) are in the field under the lower end of the hair ribbon. MDS, Breen state VI, with die cracks on the obverse and clashmarks on both sides. The M over E in AMERICA die-cutting error is strong. Graded AU55 and finest known in the Noyes and Bland census lists (Noyes photo #20371). But after a proper brushing it is clear that this cent is mint state with great luster and eye appeal. Our grade is MS60+. This is the plate coin for the variety in the 1991 Noyes reference. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; the only MS graded at PCGS. (PCGS # 35924) Value $20,000 - UP
Ex Stephen C. Fenton (Knightsbridge Coins, London)-Ronald J. Gillio 8/20/1985-Douglas F. Bird Collection.
