Lot 441

1797 C-3b R4 Lettered Edge Fair-2. Glossy dark steel brown and olive with lighter steel brown toning on the devices. The obverse is sharper, close to G4, but the reverse is considerably weaker, perhaps Fair-1+. No corrosion, verdigris, or circulation marks. This half cent was struck over a spoiled planchet, probably from a large cent, with opposing indents on both sides. The indent on the obverse has a large "O" clearly visible within the indent, and the indent on the reverse shows a line of sharp dentils. The "O" in the obverse indent is too large to be from a half cent. The date and LIBERTY are complete and clear and the edge lettering is complete except for the portions that are too tall for the thin planchet. A neat mint error and a decent example of the very scarce Lettered Edge version of the Cohen-3 variety. Value $400 - UP
Acquired from an unrecorded source at a show in Toledo, Ohio 7/1996-The Widok Collection.
