Lot 440

1797 C-3a R3 Plain. PCGS graded VF-35. Slightly sharper but there is some microscopic roughness on the bust and in the field before the neck. No verdigris and only minor contact marks including a thin vertical nick at the right bottom of the C in CENT that can help identify this cent. Rather glossy steel brown and light olive. EDS, Manley state 1.0, with a tiny spike from the chin and a dull horizontal wave in the field from the spike to the rim. This half cent was struck over a cut-down spoiled large cent with undertype visible on both sides. The ER from AMERICA on the reverse of the large cent is clearly visible at the top of the cap and portions of TY from LIBERTY are present over UN in UNITED. An attractive example of the "Low Head with Plain Edge" variety. B. Weight 97.2 grains. Our grade is VF25+. The attribution and Widok Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 3 finer: 1 in 50, 1 in 53, 1 in 63. (PCGS # 35110) Value $4,000 - UP
