Lot 411

1794 C-3b R7+ Large Edge Letters VG8. Sharpness VF30 but the obverse is covered with fine to moderate granularity and the reverse is moderately corroded. There are no notable contact marks but reddish scale mixed with a few specks of greenish verdigris covers parts of the reverse. The obverse was lightly cleaned leaving coppery tan toning on the highpoints of the devices while the rest of the toning is a darker olive brown and chocolate. Unevenly struck, as always on this variety, with weakness at the bottom of the obverse while the upper half is strongly impressed. Nonetheless the date is easily readable and the portrait details are strong. This piece is sharper than the famous Missouri Cabinet example of the variety that brought over $60,000 in our 1/26/2014 sale, and that piece was covered with fine porosity. Removed from a PCGS holder called Genuine, XF Details, Environmental Damage (same as the Missouri Cabinet example), PCGS label #35033.97/27959253 included. Struck with the reverse rotated 10 degrees clockwise. Most of the large edge letters are clear. One of the rarest varieties in the half cent series. Value $10,000 - UP
Ex a Philadelphia dealer-Mike Demling-Chris McCawley 4/17/2018-The Widok Collection (includes the Demling collection envelope).
