Lot 390

1850 N-23 R2. PCGS graded MS-65 Brown. Beautiful lustrous bluish steel and light olive with faded mint red covering at least 10% of the planchet, mostly on the reverse. The surfaces are satiny and the eye appeal of this cent is outstanding. Essentially flawless; a small puff of lighter reddish brown toning under the end of the wreath stem is the best identifying mark. E-MDS, die state a. The die flowlines are very light and the line connecting the O & F in OF has not formed. Our grade is MS64, tied for CC#4 in the Grellman census. Previously housed in an NGC slab graded MS64RB (NGC label #308001-007) but the mint color has faded too much to rate an "RB" grade at PCGS. The attribution and Nancy & Bryan Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; none finer in BN at PCGS. (PCGS # 405916) Value $1,000 - UP
Ex Jules Reiver, Heritage Auctions 1/25/2006:20452-unknown-Thomas D. Reynolds 4/25/2010-Nancy & Bryan Collection (includes the Reiver collection envelope).
