Lot 39

1796 S-104 R3 Draped Bust LIHERTY Error. PCGS graded AU-53. Choice medium brown and chocolate blending to olive brown in protected areas on the reverse. The surfaces are smooth and show only minor contact marks. The notable ones are a horizontal nick on the forehead, a diagonal nick at the hair under the earlobe, and one more in the field under the chin. There are traces of soft dirt in the protected areas on both sides but you need a glass to see it and the eye appeal of this cent is outstanding. The LIHERTY error is bold. M-LDS, Breen state III, with extensive die rust evident on both sides, strongest around UNITED STATES on the reverse. The die cracks at the O in OF and M in AMERICA are present but the die crack at TY in LIBERTY has not formed. Graded EF45 net VF35 and tied for finest known honors in the Noyes census, his photo #25308. Bland says VF35 and tied for CC#3 in his census. Our grade is VF35+. A wonderful example of this very popular "Redbook" variety. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2 (tied with the previous lot); none finer. (PCGS # 35849) Value $22,500 - UP
