1796 S-104 R3 Draped Bust LIHERTY Error. PCGS graded AU-53. Glossy light chocolate brown with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints and frosty golden tan in protected areas, particularly on the obverse. The surfaces are smooth and the eye appeal is excellent. The notable marks are a dull nick under the I in LIBERTY, a very faint scuff of hairlines on the face, a dull scratch hidden in the leaves under the N in UNITED, and a couple spots of darker reddish chocolate toning below the second S in STATES. Very early die state (VEDS), Breen state I, with smooth fields that are free of any trace of die rust, and there are sharp die clashmarks on the reverse. The front edge of the face is softly struck as it the opposing area under NT in CENT, but everything else is sharp. The LIHERTY error is bold. A new discovery that has not been seen by Noyes or Bland. A premium example of the "common" LIHERTY variety. Our grade is VF35. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; none finer. (PCGS # 35849) Value $22,500 - UP
Source not recorded-Douglas F. Bird Collection.
