Lot 37

1796 S-103 R4+ Draped Bust LIHERTY Error. PCGS graded MS-65 Brown. Lustrous medium steel brown and light olive with mint red in protected areas on both sides, especially on the reverse. A fabulous cent, virtually flawless except for some of the usual microscopic planchet flakes on the cheek and inside the wreath (all as struck). The surfaces are satiny and this cent has superb eye appeal. It is the undisputed finest example of the 1796 LIHERTY obverse by a wide margin, regardless of the die variety (S-103 and S-104 used this same obverse die). LDS, Breen state II, with fine die cracks on the reverse. Graded MS65 Choice and CC#1 by 15 points in the Noyes census, his photo #38824. Bland says MS63 and CC#1. Our grade is MS64. A highlight of this fabulous collection and a must-have for the collector of the finest "Redbook" registry set of large cents. (Note: This cent brought the highest price of all the superb 1796 large cents in the 5/4/1999 Stack's auction of the remarkable collection of 1796 US coinage assembled by John Whitney Walter.) The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer. The only MS graded at PCGS. (PCGS # 35882) Value $175,000 - UP
