Lot 29

1796 S-82 R5 Liberty Cap. PCGS graded AU-58+. CAC. Frosty golden tan and light brown with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. Hints of very faded mint color show in some of the protected areas, particularly on the reverse. The surfaces are mostly smooth but the upper half of the obverse and the opposing lower half of the reverse show many tiny planchet chips that didn't completely smooth out during the strike. The only notable contact mark is a small nick on the truncation over the 9 in the date. This cent probably never saw circulation but the tiny planchet chips on the head are a distraction. The reverse looks mint state in spite of the tiny chips on the bow and NI in UNITED. EDS, Breen state I, before any die clashmarks or bulges. Graded AU50 net EF45 and CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #25460. Bland says AU55 and CC#1. Our grade is AU55. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer. (PCGS # 35753) Value $22,500 - UP
