Lot 286

1856 N-14 R1 Italic 5. PCGS graded MS-64 Red. CAC. Lustrous bright original mint red just starting to mellow to light steel brown on the highest points of the devices, about 90% of the bright mint color remaining on both sides. A very impressive cent that has superb eye appeal. The best identifying marks are two small nicks on the rim at star 6 and a microscopic struck-through line low on the neck (as struck). MDS, die state b. The small bar under the right side of the 8 is gone and the fields are covered with microscopic radial die flowlines. Nicely struck for this variety with only minor weakness on the coronet over LIB and at the opposing area at the bottom of the wreath (your cataloger has never seen a fully struck example of this variety). Our grade is MS65, CC#1 by a small margin in the Grellman census and the "reddest" example seen. The attribution and Great Pacific Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; only 3 graded in RD at PCGS. (PCGS # 406212) Value $4,000 - UP
