Lot 281

1854 N-9 R2 "Dartboard Obverse". PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. CAC. Very attractive lustrous light bluish steel brown with generous traces of mellowed mint red remaining visible on both sides, especially on the reverse. No spots or stains, and the only contact mark is a thin diagonal nick under star 10. MDS, die state b, with die clashmarks on both sides. A stray 1 is clearly visible in the right side of the ear and part of a stray 8 shows in the space right of the Y (remnants of a date punched into the center of the obverse (the so-called "Dartboard" obverse). A shallow low spot (caused by lubricant stuck on the die) covers the upper half of the neck and most of the face and ear with additional low spots inside the wreath. Low spots such as these are quite common on this variety, and fully struck examples are quite rare. Our grade is MS62, CC#4 in the Grellman census. The attribution and Great Pacific Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; 2 finer: 1 in 64+, 1 in 65. (PCGS # 406084) Value $500 - UP
