Lot 27

1795 S-80 R5- Jefferson Head with Plain Edge. PCGS graded Fine-15. Very attractive glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. Evenly struck on a corrosion-free planchet (many of this variety are unevenly struck and have significant weakness on parts of the reverse). The only notable mark is a light rim bruise at RT in LIBERTY, The planchet has a curved planchet clip under the date and over ES in STATES (as struck). The date and legends are complete and clear. Graded VF20 sharpness net F12 and tied for CC#7 in the Noyes census, his photo #20480. Not sure why he made the deduction, but it is important to note that most of the known pieces of the variety have significant surface problems, including many of the higher-graded pieces in the Bland and Noyes census lists. This is one of the few smooth ones. Our grade is F12+. Weight 201.6 grains in spite of the minor planchet clip. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 2 finer in 20. (PCGS # 35741) Value $50,000 - UP
Ex Loye L. Lauder, William Doyle Galleries 12/15/1983:343-Douglas F. Bird Collection (lot ticket included. May also be ex Oscar J. Pearl, Numismatic Gallery 1944 FPL, lot 94).
