Lot 261

1846 N-17 R4 Small Date. PCGS graded MS-64 Red & Brown. Lustrous mint red mellowing to bluish steel brown and olive with at least half the planchet showing mint color. The only marks are a tiny speck of fine carbon at a dentil tip over star 10 and another spot at the lower right point of star 11. Neither mark is distracting and the eye appeal of this cent is outstanding. Sharply struck LDS, die state c, with die cracks on the reverse. The characteristic "moonscape" texture that covers the portrait on this variety is obvious (the same texture is found on the portrait for the 1846 N-16 and 1847 N-18 die varieties). Our grade is MS64, tied for CC#1 honors in the Grellman census. The attribution and Great Pacific Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 1 finer in 64+. (PCGS # 403902) Value $2,250 - UP
Ex McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 5/2001:1289-Great Pacific Collection (lot ticket included).
