Lot 25

1795 S-77 R3 Plain Edge. PCGS graded AU-55. CAC. Frosty medium steel brown with lighter brown and tan toning in protected areas. The only marks are a small puff of darker olive brown toning (not carbon) over the Y in LIBERTY and a very tiny planchet clip under the 1 in the date and at the opposing spot on the rim over the second T in STATES (as struck). There is a bit of strike weakness on ENT and OF, and a glass reveals microscopic planchet chips in these two areas, but the remainder of the planchet is smooth and the surfaces are choice in every respect. E-MDS, Breen state II, with the pole disconnected from the neck, a result of die polishing to remove clashmarks. The obverse is plated in Dr. Sheldon's Penny Whimsy. Graded AU50 net EF45 and tied for CC#5 in the Noyes census, his photo #20450. Bland says AU50 and tied for CC#4. Our grade is AU50+. Comes with a remarkable provenance. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 1 finer in 55+. (PCGS # 35726) Value $20,000 - UP
