Lot 245

1837 N-5 R2 Plain Hair Cord, Small Ltrs. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. Frosty light bluish steel and olive with faded mint red in the protected areas on both sides. Unbroken satiny mint luster covers this cent, even the highpoints of the devices, and the eye appeal is outstanding. The only marks, and they are trivial, are microscopic specks of darker toning (not carbon) scattered over the obverse, none notable. Otherwise this cent would qualify as a gem. MDS with die cracks on both sides. The die line connecting the bases of the I & T in UNITED is gone. Our grade is MS63+, close to MS64. A superior example of the only Plain Hair Cord/Small Letters variety of 1837; as such an important piece for every "Redbook" registry collection. The grade assigned by PCGS seems a bit low for this beautiful cent. The attribution and Great Pacific Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 4; 4 finer: 2 in 65, 1 in 65+, 1 in 66. (PCGS # 37144) Value $2,250 - UP
Ex "A Midwest Collection"-Thomas D. Reynolds 11/2007-Great Pacific Collection.
