Lot 19

1794 S-56 R3 "Office Boy Reverse". PCGS graded AU-55. Very attractive lustrous medium chocolate brown and steel. Mint frost covers the protected areas on both sides and this cent has mint state eye appeal in spite of a touch of friction on the highest points of the hair. Would rate a higher grade but there is a reddish spot below IT in UNITED, and this spot contains traces of microscopic roughness. Otherwise the only marks are some pre-striking planchet chips on the cap and opposing area at the fraction and adjacent U (all as struck), and a very light rim bruise at the I in UNITED. MDS, Breen state II, with a die crack branching down through the hair to the truncation above the 1 in the date, but the final crack from the nose to the rim has not formed. The reverse is rotated 45 degrees clockwise relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. Graded EF45 net VF35 and tied for CC#3 in the Noyes census, his photo #27578 (way too harsh in our opinion). Bland says EF45 and tied for CC#3. Our grade is EF45. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 2 finer: 1 in 62, 1 in 64+. (PCGS # 35630) Value $15,000 - UP
