Lot 18

1794 S-55 R2. PCGS graded AU-58+. Frosty steel brown and light chocolate with traces of lighter golden tan in some of the protected areas. There is a puff of darker olive brown toning in the field before the neck, another above the 7 in the date, and one more on the temple left of the eye. The only other marks are a tiny planchet chip in the field left of the cap and a line of planchet chips from just off the tip of the nose to the dentils (all as struck). The fields and protected areas are covered with satiny luster and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. MDS, Breen state II, with die clashmarks on both sides in addition to the earlier crack in the field below the cap. Noyes says AU50 net EF45 and tied for CC#3, his photo #36871. Bland says AU50 and CC#3 in his census. Our grade is AU50. This cent is plated in the 1893 Frossard-Hays and the 1923 Chapman references on the cents of 1794. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 1 finer in 64. (PCGS # 35627) Value $17,500 - UP
