1794 S-54 R3. PCGS graded About Uncirculated Details Altered Surfaces. Frosty medium brown and light chocolate. The fields are satiny and this cent has excellent eye appeal in spite of some extremely faint hairlines on both sides from a too-vigorous brushing. Sharply struck with just a touch of friction on the highest points of the devices. The only notable marks are a barely visible rim bruise under the bust tip, some microscopic planchet chips at the bust tip (as struck), a tiny tick under the earlobe, and a light scratch at the leaf under the U in UNITED. E-MDS, Breen state II, with die clashmarks on the reverse but no crack on the obverse. Graded AU50 net EF45 and CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #23922. Bland says AU50 and tied for CC#1. Our grade is AU50. The obverse is plated on page 26 in the 1979 Morley grading guide for 1794 cents to illustrate the AU55 grade. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label (PCGS # 35624) Value $17,500 - UP
