Lot 1622

1846-O, 6 over 5. PCGS graded AU-50. CAC. Lightly toned with classic soft, satin gold hues over well preserved surfaces. This is a tough date and mint, which is rarely found this nice. The overdate feature has been discredited by Mark Borckardt and Q. David Bowers back in 1999 in Bowers and Merena Harry Bass Sale, Part II, Lot 1360 for discussion. Apparently the various date punches used for Half Dollars and Gold Eagles match perfectly, and show the same slight overlaps within the 6. That would imply more of a blundered date punch than an overdate used to create this die. This revisionist history continues as more and more coins are studied, and numismatists study multiple denominations. Often collectors focus on a single denomination, and while this allows for mastery of that denomination, sometimes the answers to old questions or traditions lie in other denominations that used the same punches and much can be learned therein. Hence a number of long held overdates have been reexamined and are now believed to be repunchings instead. Nevertheless, some traditions live on, with the '5' overdate in quotes. Only 81,780 struck. Pop 13; 27 finer at PCGS for the variety. (PCGS # 8596) Value $3,200 - 3,300
