Lot 1549

1908. PCGS graded Proof 65. PQ. Should be cracked out and regraded if you have a mind to, that or try for the gold bean of happiness. Housed in a First Generation Holder, which makes this a rarity in and of itself for a proof gold coin. The surfaces of this splendid gem are, of course, utterly perfect. For that is what it took to earn a PR-65 grade from the early days at PCGS. Only a few really gem 1908 quarter eagles were around at that time (1986-1989) this one was graded during the early days at PCGS. This is the first year of the new Bela Lyon Pratt incuse design, with the obverse showing the head of an Indian Chief, the reverse with a standing eagle. These new designs proved to be quite popular despite their totally inovative incuse designs--something never previously tried on coinage in America, and a great many were coined for circulation. Even these Proofs were ordered in larger numbers than seen previously for proofs, these new Indian designs with their matte finish and subtle tiny sparkling facets. Here is one of the finer examples known, and a coin worthy of the most advanced collection. Only 236 struck. Pop 28; 27 finer, 17 in 66, 3 in 66+, 7 in 67. (PCGS # 7957) Value $25,000 - UP
